Continuing Benefits When Disabled

In the event that you become disabled after January 1, 2012, and are unable to work, your hour bank will be frozen, and benefit coverage will be maintained by the Trust Fund for up to 12 months, providing you are in receipt of Weekly Wage Replacement Income, Long Term Disability, *Workplace Safety & Insurance, or *Motor Vehicle Insurance Disability.

Following a period of Fund Assistance if you remain totally and permanently disabled, you will continue to receive Fund Assistance to the earlier of age 65 or until you start to receive a Pension or Disability Pension.

To be deemed totally and permanently disabled you must be receiving CPP Disability Benefits and be approved for Waiver of Premium of your Life Insurance.

If you continue to be disabled but not approved for Waiver of Premium and not receiving CPP Disability Benefits, you may exhaust their hour bank to provide benefit coverage. Should you still continue to be disabled, you are eligible to remit direct payment for a further 12 months, or to age 65 if earlier, provided you continue to be in receipt of one of the following benefits:

  1. *Long Term Disability benefits, or;
  2. *WSIB benefits or;
  3. *Motor Vehicle Insurance disability benefits


*Proof of acceptance and monthly benefit payments for their Workplace Safety & Insurance, or Motor Vehicle Insurance claim must be submitted to the Administrator.

NOTE: The Direct Pay and Disability Assistance Provisions cease upon your attainment of age 65, or your Retirement, if earlier. For Disabilities incurred prior to January 1, 2012 please contact the Administrator for information.

Effective January 1, 2017, if a member turns age 65 while on Disability Income, Fund Assistance will continue for the duration of the Short Term Disability, WSIB Benefits, or Motor Vehicle Insurance Disability Income, but in no event past 52 weeks. For members over age 65 who become disabled after January 1, 2017, Fund Assistance will be available for the duration of their Disability to a maximum of 52 weeks, or until they elect their pension if earlier.
